Toussaint takes communion, then has Spanish soldiers massacred before going over to the French

Haitian

On 21 June 1794, at the moment of passing into the service of the French, Toussaint took communion at Marmelade, where the marquis d’Almodas was in command, renewed his oath of fidelity to the king of Spain, mounted his horse, had his troops massacre the Spanish soldiers quartered in the bourg, and betook himself to the Petite Rivière, then to Dondon, then to Gros-Morne, where the Spanish garrisons he had placed there were likewise slaughtered. He raised the tricolor flag in all these places, and went over to General Laveaux at Port-de-Paix.

Rouzier tells this under the entry MARMELADE.
