Sonthonax gave his civil commissioner’s cordon to Dieudonné at Nérette

Haitian

It was at Nérette that Santhonax, the civil Commissioner, received, on 6 June 1794, the farewells of several Black officers, among others of Dieudonné, the chief of the national volunteers or régénérés of Port-Républicain. He placed his civil commissioner’s cord around Dieudonné’s neck, embraced him and said to him: “I delegate to you all my powers in the West; you are the representative of France; do not forget that as long as you see men of color among your own, you will no longer be free.” For a moment there was talk in these mountains of the slaughter of the mulâtres, and it was not without difficulty that Polvéral and Martial Besse succeeded in calming the effervescence of the Blacks against the former freedmen.

Rouzier tells this under the entry NERETTE.
