Jean François sacks Fort-Liberté and 950 French are slaughtered
History. Fort-Liberté fell into the power of the Spaniards on 3 February 1794. Biassou refused to submit to the authority of Jean François. The latter marched against him, promising his soldiers the pillage of the town. On 6 July he presented himself before Fort-Liberté and demanded that it be sacked. The Spaniards, fearing that he would throw himself, like Toussaint-Louverture, into the republican party, granted him everything he wanted. After mass, the massacre began in the streets and in the houses. In a few hours, nine hundred and fifty French, men, women, children and old people, were butchered. The riches of these unfortunates became the prey of the authorities. Jean François’s bands did not cease to plunder until sunset. They left the town the next day, laden with booty. The Spanish troops let them do it.
Rouzier tells this under the entry Fort-Liberté.
