Toussaint is delivered to Fort de Joux, high in the Jura

Toussaint Louverture was brought to Fort de Joux, the fortress in the Jura mountains where he would die, in late August 1802. He had been arrested in June after being invited to a parley, shipped to France, and held first at Brest. At Joux he was searched and stripped of his money, his watch and his spurs. He died there on 7 April 1803, of cold and neglect, without trial. Sources give 23, 24 and 25 August for his arrival; this entry follows the 23rd, the date the Château de Joux itself and most French accounts use.
