Toussaint has his own adopted nephew shot

Haitian

Moïse Louverture — Toussaint’s adopted nephew and one of his most senior commanders — was executed by firing squad at Port-de-Paix in November 1801, on Toussaint’s order. Moïse had opposed the labour regime that tied the newly freed to the plantations, and was blamed for the rising in the North that autumn. Toussaint had him tried and shot, and then made an example of the punishment. Sources give three different days: 21, 24 and 29 November 1801. This entry follows the 24th, the date most often carried in narrative histories; the disagreement is itself a measure of how quickly the record closed over him.
