Toussaint approves the constitution at Cap-Français and puts it in force

Haitian

On 3 July 1801, at Cap-Français, Toussaint Louverture formally approved the constitution the Central Assembly had adopted at Port-Républicain on 9 May. Article 77 asked him to transmit the text to the French government for approval and, in the same breath, invited him to bring it into force at once. He did both. The constitution abolished servitude permanently, declared every inhabitant born free and French, opened all employment regardless of colour, and made him governor for life.
