Toussaint writes to Bonaparte to explain the constitution he has just enacted

On 16 July 1801, two weeks after approving the constitution at Cap-Français, Toussaint Louverture wrote to Bonaparte about it. He had enacted a text that made him governor for life and left France’s sovereignty nominal, and he was now sending it to Paris for an approval he had not waited for.
