Tiga Garoute, who would found Saint Soleil, is born

Jean-Claude Garoute (Tiga) was born on 9 December 1935. Self-taught as a painter, ceramicist and sculptor, he founded the Poto-Mitan studio and the Musée de la céramique, and then the Saint Soleil movement, which tied painting directly to Vodou imagery and reached an international audience. André Malraux wrote about the Saint Soleil painters; Levoy Exil and Louisiane Saint Fleurant came out of the group. He died in Miami on 14 December 2006, five days after his birthday.
