The Virgin appears at Saut-d’Eau and Haiti’s great pilgrimage is born

On 16 July 1849 a villager named Fortune Morose said he saw the Virgin Mary in a palm tree above the waterfalls at Saut-d’Eau, in the Central Plateau. It was the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Word spread; more sightings followed in November, and the emperor Faustin Soulouque sent members of his cabinet to verify and ordered a chapel built at the neighboring settlement, Ville-Bonheur. For Vodouizan the Virgin of Mount Carmel is Ezili. Every July since, tens of thousands climb to the falls to bathe in the water, and it remains the largest pilgrimage in Haiti.
