The National Assembly makes Lysius Salomon president of Haiti
Haitian
Lysius Salomon had been finance minister to the emperor Faustin Soulouque. When the empire fell he fled abroad and Geffrard’s government confiscated his property. He came home after Boisrond Canal left power on 17 July 1879. He scattered the provisional government that had formed in the vacuum, and on 23 October 1879 the National Assembly named him president. He held the office for nine years.
