Dessalines raises the standard of revolt against the French in the Artibonite

Leclerc landed in February 1802 with orders from Napoleon to deport the black generals and put the chains back on. Most of the indigenous commanders had submitted. Toussaint Louverture was arrested and shipped to France. On 23 October 1802 Jean-Jacques Dessalines broke with Leclerc, rose in the Artibonite, and seized Petite-Riviere. Christophe, Petion and Clerveaux came over to him afterward. Fourteen months later the French were finished.
