Stella Jean, the first Black Italian designer in the fashion chamber, is born in Rome
Women
Stella Jean was born in Rome on 17 June 1979 to a Haitian mother, Violette Jean, and an Italian father. She built a label that puts Italian tailoring on top of Haitian and West African cloth, and refused to leave either half out. She placed second in Vogue Italia’s Who Is On Next in 2011 and showed at Milan the following year. She is the first Black Italian designer admitted to the Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana, and for years the only one. In 2020 she made the Italian fashion establishment answer publicly for the people it had never put on a runway.
