Marie Vieux-Chauvet dies in exile in New York

Marie Vieux-Chauvet died of a brain tumour in New York on 19 June 1973. She was born in Port-au-Prince on 16 September 1916 and started writing at ten. In 1968 she published Amour, colere et folie, three short novels that named what the Duvalier regime and its macoutes did to bodies and to minds. The book was pulled out of circulation almost at once, and she left for New York rather than wait for the men to come. Les Rapaces appeared in 1986, thirteen years after she died. Edwidge Danticat and a generation of Haitian women writers count her as the source.
