Poet and newspaperman Charles Moravia is born at Jacmel

Charles Moravia was born at Jacmel on 17 June 1875 and schooled at the Petit Seminaire College Saint-Martial in Port-au-Prince. He taught, wrote verse and plays, and put the last stand of La Crete-a-Pierrot on the stage. He founded two papers: La Plume, which ran from 1914 to 1915, and Le Temps, which he started in 1922. He translated Heinrich Heine into French. In 1919, with American marines occupying the country, he was named Haiti’s minister plenipotentiary to the United States. He died on 11 February 1938.
