Spanish troops destroy the French army at Sabana Real; Governor de Cussy is killed

At Sabana Real de la Limonade, in what is now Haiti’s North, a Spanish force out of Santo Domingo broke the army of French Saint-Domingue on this day. It was payback: in June 1690 Governor Pierre-Paul Tarin de Cussy had sacked and burned Santiago de los Caballeros. Around 700 Spanish raiders under Francisco de Segura Sandoval y Castilla met him near Limonade. De Cussy was killed on the field with much of his force. The French colony’s northern settlements were left open, and Cap-Francais was sacked in the aftermath.
