Edwidge Danticat was born in Port-au-Prince on this day. Her parents left for New York and her aunt and uncle raised her in Bel-Air; she joined her mother and father in Brooklyn at twelve, speaking Kreyol. At twenty-five she published Breath, Eyes, Memory. Then Krik? Krak!, then The Farming of Bones, which put the 1937 massacre of Haitians on the Massacre River into English-language literature. Brother, I’m Dying, about her uncle dying in US immigration custody in Miami, won the National Book Critics Circle Award; she was named a MacArthur Fellow in 2009.
