Prime Minister Jean-Marie Cherestal resigns under fire
Haitian
Jean-Marie Cherestal’s resignation was accepted in the council of ministers on this day. He had written the letter to President Jean-Bertrand Aristide on 17 January, after months of attacks from business, opposition parties and from inside Lavalas itself over corruption and the collapsing economy. He had been Haiti’s tenth prime minister, designated 9 February 2001 and ratified on 23 February. Yvon Neptune replaced him in March. Two years later the government he had served was gone.
