Secretary of Grand-Gosier’s chief meets the Dominican frontier guard chief

Haitian

The chief of Grand-Gosier confirmed his communication to the engineer, and on the 18th an interview took place between his secretary and the chief of the frontier guard, in the course of which the secretary tried to persuade the latter that it was fitting to suspend the works in order to avoid a rupture of violent character; to which the chief of the frontier guard replied that he could not accede to his wish without contravening the orders received; that the object of the opening of this road was simply what was expressed in the communication he showed him, which said that the creation of the road was ordered with a view to easier surveillance of smuggling on the part of the frontier guard. There had never been in these places any other Dominican forces than those indispensable for the surveillance of smuggling.

Rouzier tells this under the entry PEDERNALES.
