Sculptor and ceramist Patrick Vilaire is born in Port-au-Prince

Patrick Vilaire was born in Port-au-Prince on 16 September 1941. He works in clay and metal, and he studies the pottery of the Haitian countryside as a historian studies documents. He founded GATAPHY to give technical help to rural potters and to the small water systems of the mountains. He heads the Fondation pour la recherche iconographique et documentaire, which fights to keep Haiti’s images and papers from disappearing. He was elected to the Academie internationale de la ceramique in 1964.
