Marie Vieux-Chauvet, novelist of the dictatorship, is born in Port-au-Prince

Marie Vieux was born in Port-au-Prince on 16 September 1916 and grew up under the American occupation. She started writing at ten. In 1968 Gallimard published Amour, colere et folie, three novels that laid open what Duvalier’s terror did to ordinary people in their own houses. Her family bought up and destroyed copies, afraid of what the regime would do to them. She left for New York and died there on 19 June 1973, her best book effectively out of print for decades.
