Rosny Smarth, prime minister who resigned over rigged elections, is born

Rosny Smarth was born on 19 October 1940. In the early 1970s he worked inside Salvador Allende’s government in Chile, advising on land reform, until the coup. He became prime minister of Haiti on 27 February 1996 under Rene Preval. He quit on 9 June 1997 over the fraud in that April’s legislative elections, and no successor was confirmed for nearly two years. He died on 15 January 2025.
