Rochambeau halts fire to honor Capoix’s courage

Haitian

Soon the Cap was again surrounded by the independents, in a formidable manner. On 18 November 1803, at the attack on the Cap by the independents, Rochambeau, admiring the intrepidity of the indigenous troops, had the fire of the town cease and sends a parlementaire to congratulate Capoix, and to present him with a caparisoned horse in replacement of his own, killed under him. On the 28th the town, succumbing before the forces of the independents, capitulated, and opened its gates to them the next day. On the 30th Dessalines made his entry there, just at the moment when the French frigate the Surveillante, on which Rochambeau had embarked with the remnants of his army, is obliged to surrender to the English Commodore Whigh.

Rouzier tells this under the entry Cap-haïtien (le).
