Capoix covers himself with glory at the attack on Vertières fort

Haitian

VERTIÈRES. Habitation and fortress in the rural section of the Haut du Cap, commune of Cap-haitien, at the entrance to the road, on a small morne. The State owns 1 carreau of land there, occupied by a tenant farmer. The fort is naturally defended by the torrent of the Ravine Charrier. The French had placed 12 pieces of cannon there. In 1803 General Rochambeau, commanding the French forces, sent to Capoix, commanding the indigène forces, a caparisoned horse as the prize of his admiration for his valor on the field of battle. Capoix covered himself with glory in the attack on this fort on 18 November 1803. [see: Charrier].

Rouzier tells this under the entry VERTIÈRES.
