Rene Preval dies, the only president since Vincent to finish two terms
Haitian
Rene Garcia Preval died suddenly at Petion-Ville, aged seventy-four. Born at Marmelade on 17 January 1943, he was Aristide’s prime minister in 1991 until the September coup, then president from 7 February 1996 to 7 February 2001, and again from 14 May 2006 to 14 May 2011. He is the only Haitian president since Stenio Vincent to serve out a full constitutional mandate, and he did it twice. He was in the palace when the earthquake brought it down on 12 January 2010. He was buried at Marmelade, in the mountains, not in the capital.
