Jacques-Victor Henry, heir to a kingdom that lasted sixteen years, is born

He was born two months after independence, the youngest child of Henri Christophe and Marie-Louise Coidavid. When his father was proclaimed King of Haiti on 28 March 1811, both older brothers were already dead, so the boy became Prince Royal with the style of Royal Highness. He was tutored under the eye of the English abolitionist Thomas Clarkson, who corresponded with Christophe for years about schools for the kingdom. On 8 October 1820 Christophe shot himself at Sans-Souci rather than be taken. Ten days later, on 18 October, soldiers bayoneted the sixteen-year-old prince to death in the citadel courtyard. The dynasty ended with him.
