Duvalier opens Haiti’s first international airport at Mais Gate

Haitian

The airport at Mais Gate, eight kilometres from downtown Port-au-Prince, opened on this day. Duvalier put his own name on it: Aeroport International Francois Duvalier. After Jean-Claude fell in 1986 the name came off and it went back to Mais Gate. By an order of 4 April 2003 Aristide renamed it for Toussaint Louverture, and that is the name on it now. One runway has carried every exile, every deportation flight, and every returning president since.
