Paul Eugene Magloire, the general who ruled Haiti for six years, dies

Paul Eugene Magloire died in Port-au-Prince on 12 July 2001, a week short of his ninety-fourth birthday. He was born at Quartier-Morin near Cap-Haitien on 19 July 1907 and rose through the army. He helped push Elie Lescot out in January 1946 and Dumarsais Estime out in May 1950, then took the presidency himself in December 1950. His six years brought public works, tourist money and Hurricane Hazel, which tore the south apart in October 1954. Soldiers and a general strike forced him out in December 1956; he lived in exile in New York until 1986, then came home to bury himself in the country he had governed.
