Namphy moves to throw out the whole 1987 Constitution

Haitian

Three weeks after seizing power back from Leslie Manigat in the coup of 20 June 1988, General Henri Namphy moved on 8 July to annul the Constitution of 1987 in its entirety. His pretext was that the charter had been written in emotion, in a climate of passion, and did not answer the aspirations of the people. Haitians had ratified that constitution by referendum on 29 March 1987 with an overwhelming majority; it was the document that banned Duvalierists from office for ten years. Protests broke out across the country. On 17 September soldiers and non-commissioned officers of the presidential guard removed Namphy and sent him into exile.
