Bruny Surin born in Cap-Haitien, future Olympic relay champion

Haitian

Bruny Surin was born in Cap-Haitien on 12 July 1967. He was seven when his family left for Quebec. He started as a long jumper and competed in that event at Seoul in 1988, then turned himself into a sprinter. On 3 August 1996 in Atlanta he ran the third leg of Canada’s 4×100 metre relay with Robert Esmie, Glenroy Gilbert and Donovan Bailey, and they took the gold. In 1999 at Seville he ran the 100 metres in 9.84 seconds. Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame inducted the relay team in 2008. A boy from Okap ran that fast.
