Nissage Saget, the president who refused to stay past his term, dies

Nissage Saget died in Port-au-Prince on 7 April 1880. He was born at Saint-Marc on 20 September 1810. He led the republican opposition through Sylvain Salnave’s dictatorship and commanded the insurgent armies against it. The National Assembly elected him president on 19 March 1870. He served the full four years, and when senators pressed him to extend his mandate he said no and walked out on 15 May 1874. In Haitian political history that refusal is rarer than any victory.
