Sudre Dartiguenave, the first president under American occupation, is born

Philippe Sudre Dartiguenave was born at Anse-a-Veau on 6 April 1863. He was a lawyer, then deputy, then president of the Senate. After a mob killed President Vilbrun Guillaume Sam in July 1915 and American marines came ashore, Admiral William Caperton needed a Haitian to sign for the occupation. He passed over the rebel leader Rosalvo Bobo and took Dartiguenave, who was president from 12 August 1915 to 15 May 1922. He died in the town where he was born, on 26 July 1926. French-language sources give his birth year as 1862.
