Nicolas Louis defeats Debelle’s column

Haitian

On 21 February 1802, Nicolas Louis pursued, from the habitation Payette Petite Place to the Aubert-Trois-Rivières pass, a column of 500 men of the French General Debelle that had lost its way in the woods, retreating on Port-de-Paix, and defeated it completely. Two hundred men were sent from Port-de-Paix to the aid of the French column. At their approach, Nicolas Louis set fire to the cane of the habitation while the French were crossing it, and withdrew into the mornes. The flames and the smoke threw their ranks into disorder, and many more fell under the blows of the indigènes. They returned to Port-de-Paix to the number of one hundred, protected by the reinforcement that had come to meet them. They were crushed with fatigue, covered with mud and blood, their features distraught, resembling men who had lost their wits.

Rouzier tells this under the entry Aubert-Trois-Rivières.
