Michaëlle Jean, future governor general of Canada, is born in Haiti

Michaëlle Jean was born in Haiti on 6 September 1957. Her family fled to Canada as refugees in 1968 and she was raised at Thetford Mines, Quebec. She became a journalist and broadcaster for Radio-Canada and the CBC. From 2005 to 2010 she served as the 27th governor general of Canada, the first Haitian Canadian and the first Black person to hold the office. From 2015 to 2019 she was secretary-general of the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie.
