Michaëlle Jean, future governor general of Canada, is born in Haiti

Michaëlle Jean was born in Haiti on 6 September 1957. Her family fled to Canada as refugees in 1968 and she was raised at Thetford Mines, Quebec. She became a journalist and broadcaster for Radio-Canada and the CBC. From 2005 to 2010 she served as the 27th governor general of Canada — the first Haitian Canadian and the first Black person to hold the office. From 2015 to 2019 she was secretary-general of the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie.
