Hammerton Killick blows up his flagship rather than hand it to Germany

Hammerton Killick died on 6 September 1902; he was born 18 April 1856. He was an admiral of the Haitian navy and Firmin’s man in the civil war of that year. He had stopped a German steamer running guns north to Nord Alexis. Germany sent the gunboat Panther after him. Rather than surrender La Crête-à-Pierrot, Killick blew her up with himself aboard. A naval base in Port-au-Prince carries his name, and a Haitian stamp of 1943 carries his face.
