Messeroux camps at Garata against Dessalines

Haitian

Garata ou Karata. Habitation situated in the commune of the Coteaux, to the east of that town, where, on 8 October 1806, Messeroux, justice of the peace of Port-Salut, came to camp against Dessalines. Messeroux drank heavily; he wished to name as minister of finance his cousin Sully, whom Dessalines had called to the functions of director of customs. At a meeting of the insurgents, he was offered the rank of colonel; he refused and left the assembly in a fury, saying that he wanted to be a general of division. He gave himself over to so many extravagances that the conspirators decided to arrest him. He went to hide at the house of his cousin Sully, in a large trunk, at the approach of the guard. He was taken to prison. Long afterwards he exercised the same function of justice of the peace.

Rouzier tells this under the entry Garata ou Karata.
