George Lys Hérard was born on 30 May 1961. His father, Georges Hérard, owned a station called Radio Port-au-Prince, so the boy grew up with radio in his blood; he would later host on Radio Métropole and Tropic FM. He rapped in Kreyòl, French and English, founded the group Haiti Rap’n Ragga, and cut Vakans in 1982, one of the first rap records in Kreyòl. Sispann, Tann pou w tann, Wale kite m, Pou timoun yo: he wrote about what young Haitians were living through and refused to make it pretty. He died on 21 May 1994, nine days short of thirty-three.
