Martial Lavaud Célestin was born at Ganthier on 4 October 1913. A lawyer and a teacher, he was named prime minister by President Leslie Manigat in February 1988 — the first person to hold the office created by the 1987 Constitution. The coup of 20 June 1988 removed him. He died in Port-au-Prince on 4 February 2011, aged ninety-seven.
