Haitian
Hector Hyppolite was born at Saint-Marc on 16 September 1894. His father and grandfather were oungan before him, and so was he. He made shoes and painted houses for a living. In 1945 DeWitt Peters found him and brought him into the Centre d’Art in Port-au-Prince, and in three years he painted more than two hundred canvases. Andre Breton and Wifredo Lam bought his work in December 1945 and carried his name to Paris. He died on 9 June 1948, still poor.
