Marc Bazin, Washington’s candidate, is born at Saint-Marc

Marc Louis Bazin was born at Saint-Marc on this day. He was a World Bank economist, then finance minister under Jean-Claude Duvalier in 1982, fired within five months for going after corruption, which earned him the name Mr Clean. In the December 1990 election the Americans backed him; Aristide beat him with 67 percent to his 14. After the army overthrew Aristide, Bazin took the prime minister’s office from June 1992 to June 1993 under the coup government, and the country was under embargo the whole time. He died in Port-au-Prince on 16 June 2010, five months after the earthquake.
