Magloire-Saint-Aude, the surrealist who joined nothing, dies in Port-au-Prince

Clément Magloire fils was born in Port-au-Prince on 2 April 1912, son of the director of the newspaper Le Matin. He took the name Magloire-Saint-Aude from his mother’s family. In 1937 he helped found the review Les Griots. When André Breton came to Haiti during the war, he read Magloire-Saint-Aude and had him published in the literary pages of Le Figaro. He left three thin, hermetic books: Dialogue de mes lampes and Tabou in 1941, Déchu in 1956. He belonged to no party and no movement, drank hard, and died in Port-au-Prince on 27 May 1971.
