Father Gérard Jean-Juste dies in Miami

Gérard Jean-Juste was born in Cavaillon on 7 February 1946. He led the Haitian Refugee Center in Miami from 1977 to 1990, fighting for boat people the United States wanted to send back. In Haiti he was rector of Sainte-Claire in Port-au-Prince, a parish where he fed hundreds of children, and he preached liberation theology and stood with Fanmi Lavalas. After the fall of Aristide in 2004 he was arrested and jailed as a political opponent, then took refuge in the United States. He died in Miami on 27 May 2009.
