Magloire Ambroise rallies Port-au-Prince and closes its gates
Haitian
On the news of these disasters, General Magloire Ambroise left Port-au-Prince with the 12th half-brigade to fly to the aid of Pétion. “ The enemy is upon us ”, the many fugitives whom he met told him. He had presence of mind enough to close the gates of the town to the victors, rally the fugitives and take command, for the fate of Pétion was unknown. Along the ditches he stationed all those who were able to bear arms. Yayou, Lys, Canneau and Lamarre waited with firm foot. At two o’clock in the afternoon it was learned that Pétion had landed at Truitier de Naucresson. The fort of the Saint Joseph gate (Lamarre) and the National fort repulsed the invaders, who were compelled to beat a retreat.
Rouzier tells this under the entry SIBERT.
