Coutard takes Pétion’s hat and is cut down at Blanchard bridge
Haitian
By a movement of rare magnanimity, a young officer, Coutilien Coutard, captain of a company of grenadiers of the 3rd, took off the hat on which all the blows were being concentrated, without even reflecting that in order to save the life of his chief he was exposing himself to certain death. Surrounded in an instant by a crowd of enemies, his horse, driven hard, fell at the bridge of Blanchard. Those who pursued him hacked him with sabre blows.
Rouzier tells this under the entry SIBERT.
