Here is the decree naming general of division Louis Pierrot to the office of President of the Republic: The Council of State “Upon the communication made to it by the Secretaries of State for War, for the Interior, for Justice and for Finance, of the grievous loss the country has just suffered in the person of the brave and modest Philippe Guerrier, President of the Republic;

“Having regard to article 10 of the decree of 29 November 1844 on the institution of the Council of State,

“Decrees as follows:

“Article one. The Council of State, in accord with the wish of the Nation, and rendering homage to the patriotic virtues and to the merit of general of division Louis Pierrot, commander in chief of the Department of the North, proclaims him unanimously President of the Republic.

“Art. 2. The present decree shall be forthwith dispatched to the Council of the Secretaries of State for its execution.

“Given at the National House of Port-Républicain, 16 April 1845, year 42 of Independence.
