Up comes one of the insurgents, Leandro Espinosa, who leads him to the customs house without hindrance. The sergeant of the post had been won over. He calls his captain, Miguel Déchapte, who offers no resistance: he had been told that they had separated from the Haitians, that there were more than a thousand men at the Porte del Conde, and that others were expected from Bani, from St-Christophe, and from upper and lower los Llanos. Déchapte says to an African among his men: “You people who keep repeating that you are going to be put back into slavery by the Haitians, you will be free now; we are going to be commanded by ourselves.” He declares, however, that he does not answer for holding the post unless they seize the port office, where the armed boatmen of the roadstead are stationed.
