Lamartinière is ambushed and beheaded at Cortad
In 1802, Larose having been appointed at the Crochus chief of the insurgents of the mornes of the Arcahaie, in place of Destrade, who had withdrawn into the mountains of the Bahoruco, this new chief conceived the idea of reconquering the mornes of the Arcahaie from Lamartinière. He gathered all his partisans, to the number of 3,000, on the Cortad habitation, and put himself at their head. Lamartinière marched to meet him. As soon as he had reached the last barricade placed by the insurgents, he was received by a lively fire and dreadful howls. His soldiers returned fire, but they were already wholly committed to the ambush; they were assailed from all sides. Lamartinière, seeing his soldiers succumb to numbers and flee through the woods, withdrew alone into one of the gardens of the Cortad habitation. Jean-Charles Courjol, one of the chiefs of the insurgents, rushes in pursuit of him and discovers him stretched on the grass, suffering from several wounds he had received. He throws himself upon him, seizes him by the hair and cuts off his head on 2 November, the very day of the death…
Rouzier tells this under the entry Cortad.
