Alexis Michel Justin Lhérisson was born in Port-au-Prince on 10 February 1873, into a modest family. He was a journalist at sixteen and later ran his own paper. He founded the daily Le Soir, and from 1899 published there the first written lodyans, alongside Fernand Hibbert. He wrote the poem that became La Dessalinienne. He was dead at thirty-four.
