Jovenel Moïse announces the rebuilding of the National Palace
Haitian
On 19 April 2017, ten weeks into his term, President Jovenel Moïse announced that Haiti would rebuild the National Palace. The earthquake of 12 January 2010 had folded its three white domes in on themselves, and the ruins were demolished in 2012, leaving the seat of the Haitian state as an empty lawn on the Champ de Mars. Moïse presented a committee of engineers and architects and promised the outside would look the same while the inside would be modern and earthquake-resistant. He was assassinated in his private house at Pèlerin on 7 July 2021. The lawn was still a lawn.
