President Tancrède Auguste dies in office after eight months

Tancrède Auguste died on 2 May 1913, about eight months into his presidency. He was born at Cap-Haïtien on 16 March 1856, made a fortune in land and trade, served repeatedly as minister of the interior and police, and was convicted in the consolidation corruption trials under Nord Alexis before an amnesty released him. He came to power in August 1912, days after his predecessor Cincinnatus Leconte was blown up inside the National Palace. Auguste was one of the rare Haitian heads of state to die in the job instead of running for a ship. The National Assembly replaced him on 4 May. Four more men held the office in the twenty-six months between his death and the American invasion.
