Joe Gaetjens is presumed murdered at Fort Dimanche

Haitian

Joe Gaetjens was born in Haiti on 19 March 1924 and won the Haitian championship with Etoile Haitienne. Playing for the United States at the 1950 World Cup he scored the goal that beat England 1-0, the biggest upset the tournament had seen. He came home to Port-au-Prince and stayed out of politics; his brothers did not. On 8 July 1964 the Tonton Macoutes took him from his shop and drove him to Fort Dimanche. He was never seen again. His family and most accounts put his death at about 10 July 1964. He was forty.
